Leaving a Legacy

Lance and I ended the holiday weekend watching a John Wayne movie, The Shootist. Seems appropriate enough with the 4th of July being such a great red, white and blue celebration. Lauren Bacall is also amazing in this film, proving once again that the film industry used to be much classier! Seems movie stars of today are famous just for being famous. Wouldn’t it be great if success were measured by the number of lives you touched instead of Forbes list?
One of the producers of the The Shootist was asked his thoughts on working with John Wayne and he said
he is a man who lives by a code which he believes in, and which he applies to others: `I won’t be wronged, I won’t be insulted, and I won’t be laid a hand on. I don’t do these things to other people, and I require the same from them.’ Impressive.
And one final thought on Mr. Wayne, everyone in Hollywood thought his nickname (The Duke) came from royalty status, quite the contrary, he was nicknamed that at a young age because of his love for a dog by the same name. Now that is classy!

Never to late

Seems Betty White is all over the media lately. So impressive how she has managed to re-invent herself at the young age of 88. I watched her interview with Jon Stewart this week and one thing in particular stood out to me, she has taken the high road and chosen not compromised her principles to get face-time on the media. Jon asked her if there was anything she wouldn’t do and she said she’s been asked to play the pot-smoking Grandma (cause that would make good tv!) and she refused as to not endorse drug use. She is also an animal advocate, not accepting any roles that would show harm to her furry friends. I salute you Betty White, what a strong and classy lady!
